Decibel Hifi – great dealers

June 13, 2010

It been a pleasure to discover another great audio dealer, Decibel Hifi ( way up in brizvegas.

I was in the market for a new phono amp and cartridge, Brian was helpful, knowledgeable and very quick on the emails. Answering pretty much every inane question I had within the hour.

I managed to pick up an great little Graham Slee, 2nd hand from his website at a great price. Then I connected it up and something didnt sound right, oh no I thought here we go again. I contacted Brian and he was straight away on too it. “Send it back for testing, I will replace it straight away”. What a gem, no hassles just excellent customer service. How good is that?

anyway, It turned out the amp was fine, it was the turntable. (just as Brian suggested) there were broken cables in the arm (thanks ebay..)

So I have been going back and forth with him, causing endless amounts of hassle for a couple of hundred bucks 2nd hand sale and Brian cant do enough to help me out, you gotta love this guy.

If your in the market for turntable stuff, I highly recommend these guys. sure you can find cheaper deals, but the service and support are well worth it.

Carlton Audio Sale

June 1, 2009

With the GFC bitting there should be some good bargains about. Well with one sale being replaced by another, here is Carlton Audio doing it again

This is the web listing for “Carlton Audio Visual” , here in melbourne. This is being updated as they go, but well worth a look.

As I have said before I have done business with these guys, they are pretty good and stand by their stuff. Although they can be a bit pricey and the store is insanely small and busy. Expect to wait on the weekend if you want a demo.

Changes to ‘Lemon Law’

March 16, 2009

After my issues with Trevor Lees Audio, I have been intending to make a submission to have Victoria consumer law changed. I believe that the consumer should have greater protection, with a right to refund if sold a lemon.
As such I have been in contact with my local member – Hon Marsha Thomson
Here is a copy of the advice received – 12/03/09

“As this will soon be a Federal issue it is suggested you send copies of your letter to both the Victorian Minister for Consumer Affairs

Hon Tony Robinson
Minister for Consumer Affairs
Level 5, 1 Macarthur Street
East Melbourne 3002

and the Federal Minister

Hon Chris Bowen
Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs
P.O. Box 6022
House of Representatives
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
Hon Marsha Thomson”

I would encourage anyone who has had similar issues to also make a submission. It’s the only way to get some real protection from such practises and dealers

Ipod’s crap sound – Wadia the solution?

March 8, 2009

I love my ipod for so many reasons, its 80g of sanity that helps me cope with most days. I couldn’t even contemplate the commute into work each day without it. Yet this all this still doesn’t erase the fact the ipod sound is total rubbish.
It doesn’t matter what ‘lossless’ format you burn or how many hundreds of dollar you spend on headphones, the thing still sounds crap. (Strangely enough good headphones just seem too highlight the fact more.)

I believe there maybe a solution..the Wadid 170 iTransport
It basically a transport unit that will let you bypass ipods unbelievably poor DAC. As long as you have a better DAC available with a digital input, you’re on your way.

Wadia Website 170i page
– surprisingly unhelpful

The best look at the business end

The What HiFi Review

All this sounds pretty good until you factor in the price. The unit starts at $700 AUD. I guess I will waiting a while longer before I hear a better sound from my ipod.

White Van Speaker Scam – has returned

February 24, 2009

The white van speaker scam, famous the world over, after a short tour of NSW is now doing the rounds in Victoria. ( Note The 2 Victoria companies listed as connected to the distribution side of the scam. ) But the scam has now been updated to include websites – “Denmark Audio” , “Symphony Orchestra

It even made the Age website

It seems like common sense, but each time someone falls for it. I mean, who buys anything from guys out of a van at the lights? let alone a grand worth of speakers?

There is a scam site trying to track these guys, which is a great idea. but it will be an uphill battle to get anything back.

It would seem like the same people have been up to the same thing for years and years. Yes, people are pretty stupid sometimes, but the law really should provide more protection for the consumer.

Unfortunately some of the brands have started to turn up on ebay “Denmark Audio” & “Icon-media lab”, I hope nobody else gets burnt.

“Audiophile” products or rip-off’s ?

January 15, 2009

I love stereo, the look, the sound, the feel the works. But underneath all of that there is a general unease about being ripped off. I mean do $300 cables really make that much difference?

Not so long ago, in a well known Melbourne store, I had a guy trying to sell me an “audiophile level power cable”. It was involved sale pitch about how many people he had sold too and what an amazing difference this cable made. As he said “…you wouldn’t believe how many people tell me what a difference it makes…” . The kicker being, “…because, sound its really important, you know…”. Needless to say, I didn’t buy the power cord, rather I took the in box. But it got me thinking about “audiophile” products.

This is a website that lists the worst of this sort of rip-off. It makes for some great reading and really shows what people will believe when they want too.

VCAT Hearing results

December 10, 2008

After an long and difficult hearing lasting several hours, in which 2 totally different accounts of what happened were presented, VCAT have handed down a binding decision. This has awarded me a refund of $2,000.

$800 was taken off the total due to “use” of the gear , Trevor Lees Audio attempts to resolve the matter (shown by the replacement units.) as well as taking into account his “out pocket” amount for providing the refund.  This decision is now a matter of public record, I will update the blog once all the details have come through.  I will also edit the blog of some content.

I am happy with the decision and that this contracted and painful process is over. I am disappointed with the length of time to resolution and the “lack” of protection afforded to consumers in this situation. I intend to make submission over this law, as I believe that the consumer should have greater protection and a final “right to refund”

Just say no, to Trevor Lees…

November 22, 2008

This is a warning to anyone contemplating purchasing goods from Trevor Lees Audio in Kew, Melbourne. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend strongly enough against doing this.

I am currently attempting to recover $2800, after being sold new goods by Trevor Lees Audio which broke within 2months of purchase. After numerous returns I requested a refund, to which was informed I would “…have to go to small claims court if I ever wanted too see my money..”.

Had I known what know now, I would have avoided Trevor Lees Audio like the plague.
